On February 15, 2023, the regional essay contest in English “Speak your mind” was launched among students of the graduating classes of Karaganda and the Karaganda region, the purpose of which is to popularize the study of foreign languages among high school students, the development of their foreign language communicative and linguocultural competencies, the etiquette of writing, as well as encouraging the expression of views and ideas on issues of concern to them.
The regional essay contest “Speak your mind” for 11th grade students of schools, lyceums, gymnasiums of Karaganda and Karaganda region was organized and conducted by the Department of Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication of the CHU “Bolashaq Academy” together with the Department of Education of the Karaganda region and the center “Saryarka Daryny”.
Applications for participation in the competition were received from 149 students from 73 schools, gymnasiums and lyceums of the cities of Karaganda, Temirtau, Abai, Sarani, Shakhtinsk, Balkhash, Priozersk; Bukharzhyrau, Karkaralinsky, Nurinsky, Osakarovsky, Shetsky districts, as well as the village of Burma. 56 secondary schools, 11 gymnasiums, 6 lyceums of the region took part in the competition.
The contestants wrote essays on the following topics:
Language and culture as a national treasure in a multicultural environment.
Flexibility of mind and thinking in the 21st century.
Profession and vocation… Can they match?
What are the features of the “screen” culture?
All competitive works have passed the plagiarism verification procedure in order to confirm the fact of the author’s composition of the text. Works with at least 95% originality were allowed to participate in the competition.

Osipovich Alexandra Vladimirovna – Lecturer of the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the Karaganda State University. academician E.A. Buketov;
Beisembayeva Aigerim Urazanbekovna – Senior lecturer of the Department of Foreign Philology, doctoral student of the Faculty of Philology of the National Academy of Sciences of Karaganda University. academician E.A. Buketov.
The students ‘ competitive works were evaluated according to the following criteria:
– compliance of the content of the work with the declared topic and the requirements of the competition;
– originality of the text;
– literacy;
– semantic integrity, speech coherence and sequence of presentation;
– reflection of the author’s position, reasonableness of the expressed opinion;
– the variety of lexical and grammatical means presented.
The procedure for checking for plagiarism of all the submitted works showed that not all essays successfully passed the originality threshold of at least 95%, and thus 138 works of participants were allowed to be evaluated by the jury, of which 6 best essays were determined.

Winners awarded with diplomas of I degree will receive a discount of 100%, II degree – 50% and III degree – 25% for the first year of study at the CHU “Bolashaq Academy” for any educational program of the university.
The results of the competition and the awarding of the winners will be held on March 10 in the main building of the CHU “Bolashaq Academy”. Thank-you letters will be handed over to teachers-heads of competitive works.
