The seminar on research activities was held on November 15 at “Bolashaq” Academy. It was an informative event organized by the Department of Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication. We were glad to see our colleagues from other departments as guests, T.P. Smolkina, Vice-Rector for Research Activity, as well as a small but inspired group of students, our young scientists. As an honorary guest, the seminar was attended by Gareth Dyke, a guest professor from Great Britain.
Margarita Yulaevna Ishmuratova told the audience about the updated requirements of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan for scientific publications of scientists and PhD, as well as to the heads of graduate and doctoral students. Attendees were simply and clearly explained the principle of calculation of the Hirsch Index, the idea of “quartile” and “personentil” of journals in the science bases, as well as requirements that are important and necessary to meet the scientists of Kazakhstan.
Anna Kalizhanova in her presentation showed a completely different perspective on the problem of publishing articles in journals with non-zero impact factor. Publications in magazines that are part of the Scopus or Thomson Reuters database, after the presentation seemed to be easy and risk-free challenge to the scientist, and a matter of experience and calculation. Specific information was given on the structure of IMRAD articles and the foreign approach to describing research. Also the most popular myths about Scopus base were considered and explanations on each item were given.
Dariga Zhumabekovna Toluspaeva briefly shared her experience of participation in online webinars Clarivate Analytics dedicated to the use of Web of Science.
In conclusion, a startup project was presented – a joint work of the faculty of the Department, Gareth Dyke and 2nd year students, namely, the international journal of open access, with a view to its subsequent entry into the Scopus database.
The seminar raised a lot of questions from the guests, but at the same time left a pleasant impression, added motivation, faith in themselves and their research skills.
Our department intends to continue working to improve the quality of publications among PPS and students. There will be many more seminars and useful information ahead of us. Stay tuned!
