Kolbasov’s artillerymen shot the enemy tanks at point-blank range. Three times the enemy rolled back and attacked again, but the gunners became a wall again. On the same day, Kolbasov’s platoon destroyed 46 vehicles with the enemy infantry moving on the roads to our positions with accurate firing raids from its two guns.

On July 11, concentrating up to 150 tanks and two infantry regiments, the enemy fell on the left flank of the 288th Guards Rifle Regiment. After a fierce bombardment of our batteries, 17 “tiger” tanks appeared in the area of brave artillerymen of Kolbasov, firing on guns from three sides. Having unfolded the guns, the gunners met them with crushing fire. Three of the tanks caught fire, but the enemy was attacking. With a direct hit of the projectile, the cannon was crumpled and Nikolai’s gun count was disrupted. Then sausage himself stood by the cannon. He was both a gunner and a loader, and a projectile carrier. Letting the tanks of the enemy closer, Sausage hit without a miss. He hit four tanks that didn’t reach his gun just a few tens of meters.

There were fewer men and shells left in the platoon, the enemy regrouped and moved towards Sausage’s gun again. The fearless commander organized a circular defense and together with the infantry soldiers with personal weapons destroyed about 100 Hitlerites. The enemy began to retreat in order to surround the brave. Sausage raised the remaining people to counterattack and led them out of the ring of enemy tanks and machine guns.
