Alash Orda: Zhusipbek Aimauytov

Zhussipbek Aimauitov (Aimauytov) is a writer, the founder of drama and novel in Kazakh, a scientist, enlightener, teacher and psychologist.

He was born in 1889 in Bayan-Aul district of Pavlodar county. He lived in a poor family. His great-grandfathers Dandebay and Kuan were respected and educated people of a noble family. From childhood he studied Arabic literacy, blacksmithing and wood carving. Originates from the subgenus Kulboldy of the Suindyk tribe of the Argyn tribe.

At the age of 18 Zhusipbek studied one winter at the Russian school, then two months at the state agricultural school where he learned the Russian language. In 1911-1914 – aul teacher, in 1914 he entered the Semipalatinsk teacher’s seminary, which he completed in 1919. Here he gets acquainted with Kanysh Satpayev and Mukhtar Auezov. Together with Auezov in 1917, he founded the Kazakh youth organization “Zhanar”. He became the editor of the magazine “Abai”, which since 1918 began to publish in Semipalatinsk with the help of Auezov. Later, Mukhtar Auezov, a classic of Kazakh literature, called Aimautov his teacher. While studying at the seminary, Zhusipbek Aymauitov worked as a chaser, carpenter, cobbler and made dombra. Being a seminarian, he together with Akhmet Baitursynov and Mirzhakip Dulatov and other figures of national intelligentsia takes an active part in the work of the national party “Alash Orda”.

In 1919-1922 – member of the board of the People’s Commissariat of the Republic, head of the Semipalatinsk provincial department of education, editor of the newspaper “Qazaq tili”. In 1922-1924 – teacher in Karkaralinsk, in 1924-1926 – literary worker of the newspaper “Ak Zhol” (Tashkent), in 1926-1929 – director of Shymkent Pedagogical College. In 1929 he moved to Kyzyl-Orda to work in the newspaper “Enbekshi Kazak”.

His articles were not liked by authorities and soon he was arrested on false accusation of appropriation of donations allocated for starving Turgai, Kustanay, Aktobe.

He was acquitted. But after a short time Aymautov was again arrested on a charge of counterrevolutionary activity and was forwarded to Moscow.

He was convicted by the board of the OGPU and shot on April 21, 1930 at the age of 41 years.

He was buried in Vagankovskoye cemetery in the common grave together with other repressed people.
